Drama Quotes: Reply 1988 | part 1

Hey guys! In my last post, I shared my thoughts about Reply 1988, a remarkable South Korean slice of life drama, that I watched last month and I mentioned that I’m going to share a collection of quotes from that. To be honest, there are too many quotable lines, and I usually only choose 8-10 but I want to include more so I decided to double it and have 2 posts.

Without further adieu, here are the first half (from Episodes 1-12):

“The year is 1988. It was a time when it was chilly, but our hearts were fiery, and we didn’t have much, but people’s hearts were warm.”

– Deok-sun

“There was no internet or any smartphones back then. Thinking about it now, how did we spend all that time?”

– Deok-sun

“In some ways, one’s family is the most oblivious. But what’s so important about knowing? In the end, what helps you overcome obstacles isn’t brains, but someone who’ll take your hand and won’t let you go. In the end, that’s family. Even for heroes, even if it’s an even greater hero, the people they go back to in the end is family. The scars we receive from the outside world, the scars we receive from life experiences… even the scars we receive from family, the people who’ll embrace you and be on your side until the end.

In the end, it is family.”

– Deok-sun

“Adults are just enduring it. They are just busy doing things as an adult and they just acted strong due to the pressure that came with their age. Adults feel pain, too.”

– Deok-sun

“Mothers tend to be the one you miss the most, whether they’re alive or dead. Gosh, I miss my mom.”

– Dong-il

“No matter how much better others’ things may seem, they all have their faults.”

– Dong-il

“When people get stronger, it’s not through their pride, but when they throw away their pride.”

– Bora

“Time continues to pass. That’s why time eventually creates farewells and it always leaves people with regrets. If you love someone, you have to tell them now, before your fleeting days become filled with regrets. In some ways, the biggest gift that time leaves us with is the memories we have of loving others. That’s why, before it’s too late, you have to shove embarrassment aside and confess your love to your loved ones.”

– Deok-sun

“Our feelings can be put into words. That’s why one simple word can give off warmth. In this cold, harsh world, the thing that keeps the warmth in life so that we feel it is worth living… is not a wise saying, or a refined, pithy remark. It is one warm remark filled with our raw, unrefined feelings.”

– Deok-sun

“A line indicates a limit. Maintaining that boundary means maintaining the familiarity and the world, the rules, and the relations of that familiarity. This also means if we were to never cross that line, we would never experience the world, rules, and relationships outside of the boundary.”

– Deok-sun

“It’s really difficult to love someone. Loving someone does not mean that you love to feel them near you. But it means that you love to acclimate yourself to them. Loving someone means no matter how much pain that person causes you, that you find yourself wanting to hate them so much, you can never bring yourself to hate them. Loving someone doesn’t mean that you don’t hate them. It means you can’t hate them.”

    1. haha I think that’s what makes the show unforgettable. It stayed true to reality. It’s very relatable, very real, and raw.

Their skin is just goals! It’s so clear! Haha

    2. I remember my friend from BF Homes, he’s the only one who lives in their family mansion… they are old rich but you know, the family money eventually runs out when the rich members passed on… so him, he is a regular employee so he needed “extra budget” — back then, we didn’t know about it.. but we noticed that whenever we hang @ his house, there are random faces popping in and out. We never asked til we saw a bunch of glow friends… like 10 Koreans walking together from upstairs using a different exit door… apparently, he rents half the house to a bunch of Korean students and they were normal, non celebrities BUT they still look so translucent 😀 😀 😀 and literally glowing! We never realized how brown we were 😀 😀 😀

    3. Hahaha in the village in my hometown, too. There are a lot of Korean people and every time I see one, mapapatingin ka talaga.

Room/house for rent business in the Philippines is stronger now especially when traveling became a trend and it’s cheaper to rent than book a hotel. It’s like an Airbnb but they call it transient house/room.

This is my favorite! It is true especially when people admit their mistakes. Stronger people swallow their pride and admit their mistakes instead of turning away from it. Love the quotes, Nath! ☺️💚

  2. Now I’m even more excited to watch this show! The one about missing your mum really hit hard- I’m staying in a different country than my parents and I really miss my mum more than anything.
